Introduction to the Synod

Pope Francis has declared the formation of a world-wide synod, where each parish throughout the world has been asked to participate in this unique, historic, “local but global” Synod event.

Synod means “we journey together on the same road.”

We are excited to begin our parish Synodal event, and we invite “all people of God” to participate in “journeying together” with hope for the Catholic church.  This is a unique “moment in time” for people of all generations to join this effort to explore, renew and prayerfully consider possible change.

While a Catholic Synod is typically an assembly of bishops, this special synod is an assembly of all generations of people, at the parish level to share their thoughts, opinions and pray together to understand more fully how to take the church forward.

Our parishes comments will be collected, and the collection will continue at diocesan level, then national and ultimately culminate in October of 2023 at the Synod of Bishops in Rome.

Pope Francis has announced that “Synodality” is the path for the entire people of God, to make pastoral decisions that reflect the will of God, grounded in the “living voice” of the people of God. This Synod is intended to inspire people to dream, to make hope flourish, to weave new and deeper relationships, to learn from one another, to build bridges, warm hearts and restore strength to our hands for a common mission.

This special Synod is quite different. It is meant to start a grass-roots effort to synthesize thoughts and opinions to take the Catholic Church forward in the 21st Century.

We are being asked to speak boldly, honestly, and prayerfully prior to answer the four survey questions. Each of us should take time to reflect before responding to the questions.

Help us look toward the future

You can respond to these questions in a few ways: You can email your responses to AssumptionSynod22@gmail.com. / You can submit your responses on available forms in Church / You can complete the survey at www.assumptionemerson.org/synod beginning February 4th.
